Martinho da Arcada

Information on the Martinho da Arcada restaurant

On January 7th 1782, the Casa das Neves was established, achieving its current name of Martinho da Arcada in 1845. It is the oldest cafeteria in Lisbon and many famous people have passed through its doors over the years: Bocage, Eça de Queirós, Cesário Verde, Columbano, Gago Coutinho, Duarte Pacheco,… but the cafeteria was always strongly linked to one of the most famous writers, Fernando Pessoa, who made it his office, and it is said he paid for many of his dinners with his poems, such as the one he wrote on a menu and which hangs on one of the walls still today. You can still see his usual table with a coffee cup a glass of spirits, and some of his books. Today you can enjoy a light lunch sitting on the terrace overlooking the National Palace of the Comercio Square

Hours: Monday to Saturday until 22.00.
